There is nothing subtle about Safety Hat.
Created in an unmistakably vivid orange, the colour immediately reminded me of the bright orange safety witches seen on roads and worksites — and the name stuck.
The design was inspired by one of Mum’s original millinery pieces, then reworked in my own way for Bateman Original Designs. It carries that connection to her work, while still being very much its own bold, modern statement.
This one-of-a-kind hat is built around a dramatic arrangement of silk flowers and ribbon, creating volume, movement and impact from every angle. The sepals and leaves have been individually hand beaded, while the silk flowers and ribbon were carefully arranged, tied together and sewn into place before the entire composition was securely hand sewn onto the hat base.
The result is a bold, sculptural piece made for someone with confidence, a sense of humour, and absolutely no desire to blend into the crowd.
And, rather appropriately, Safety Hat proved true to its name at its first market appearance. When the wind kept knocking it from the display, the safest place for it turned out to be on my head — where it stayed for much of the day.
