Returning to My Roots

For many people, a career change means leaving one profession behind to start another. For me, it feels more like coming home.

Before spending many years building a successful career in real estate, I grew up surrounded by fashion, design and creativity. My mother, Sheila Bateman, was an award-winning designer and milliner whose work appeared in the Australian Gown Of The Year and later through The Hat Gallery. From a very young age I was helping behind the scenes, attending fashion events and learning that every garment and every hat began with an idea, patience and skilled hands.

Fashion has always been part of my life.

Real estate gave me opportunities I will always be grateful for. It taught me professionalism, customer service, attention to detail and the importance of understanding exactly what people need. Those skills have become an unexpected foundation for Bateman Original Designs.

Now I am returning to the industry where it all began.

Bateman Original Designs is built on the heritage my mother created, while also looking forward with my own ideas and designs. You'll see historical pieces that celebrate Sheila's remarkable career alongside my own contemporary work in millinery, fashion accessories and custom apparel.

Some designs will be inspired by memories of growing up in the industry. Others will be completely new. Every piece, however, is created with the same philosophy that was passed down to me—quality, individuality and craftsmanship always come first.

This blog is where I'll share that journey.

I'll write about new designs, the creative process, restoring and preserving pieces from the Bateman archive, market days, behind-the-scenes projects, and the occasional story from growing up in a world filled with fashion shows, workrooms and design.

Thank you for joining me as I return to my roots.

I hope you enjoy the journey.
