History The Hat Gallery
Established 1999 — Reopened 2026
The Hat Gallery was established in 1999 by Sheila Bateman as the millinery division of Bateman Original Designs.
At the age of 62, and after decades working in dressmaking and fashion design, Sheila began looking towards smaller, less physically demanding projects. Having previously created hats to accompany her Australian Gown of the Year entries, millinery was a natural extension of her creative talents.
Sheila also recognised a gap in the market. Hats were becoming increasingly difficult to find at local markets, presenting an opportunity to offer something different.
While millinery became her main focus, she continued dressmaking and designing outfits to complement her hats.
Over the following decade, The Hat Gallery produced hats for a variety of occasions. Among its memorable highlights were creations worn at Royal Ascot in England and a striking red hat that appeared on Australian television's Rove Live.
The End of an Era
The Hat Gallery's closing-down sale concluded in November 2009. The remaining collection was subsequently offered online, with every hat sold within approximately one month.
